3-(Methylnitrosamino)propanal (NMP) is a carcinogen that is found in the urine of smokers. It is created when amines from the cigarette smoke react with nitrosamines from the tobacco. 3-(Methylnitrosamino)propanal has been shown to cause cancer in animal models, and it has been linked to an increased risk for cancer in humans who are exposed to NMP. 3-(Methylnitrosamino)propanal is metabolized by cytochrome P450 enzymes, which are found in many tissues including the liver and lungs. This metabolism forms an intermediate that reacts with oxygen and nitrite to form a DNA adduct. The resulting DNA adducts can lead to mutations that may result in tumor formation.
