7-Methylpterin is an intermediate in the synthesis of sepiapterin, which is a cofactor for tetrahydrofolate (THF) synthase. Sepiapterin is synthesized from two molecules of 7-methylpterin and one molecule of glyceraldehyde 3-phosphate. The enzyme preparations for this reaction are glycosidases, phosphoglycerate kinase, and glycerate kinase. This product has been found to be active at acidic pHs and can serve as a fluorescent probe for acid analysis.
