Metoprolol is a beta blocker drug that is used to treat various cardiovascular disorders. It has been shown to be effective in reducing the risk of heart disease, as well as treating high blood pressure and angina pectoris. Metoprolol binds to beta-receptors in the heart and blood vessels, blocking the action of catecholamines such as adrenaline, which causes an increase in heart rate and force of contraction. Metoprolol has been shown to be effective for both men and women, but it may lead to side effects such as fatigue and dizziness in women.
