5-Methoxy-2-methylindole-3-acetic acid (5MMIA) is a fatty acid derivative that has been shown to induce mitochondrial membrane depolarization in some cell lines. It also inhibits the production of gamma-aminobutyric acid and induces mitochondrial membrane potential in mouse tumor cells. 5MMIA has been shown to reduce body mass index and colorectal adenocarcinoma in mice. Preliminary studies have shown that 5MMIA inhibits cox-2 activity, which may be due to its hydrophobic effect.
