Methyl 2-fluoro-3-oxopentanoate is a methanolic solution that has a centrosymmetric crystal structure. It is an electrophilic compound that is hydrogen bonded to water molecules. This chemical has the ability to form anhydrous, regioselective dimers with diketones. The presence of fluorine in the molecule increases its acidity and dihedral angles, which leads to its high selectivity for pyrimidines over purines. Methyl 2-fluoro-3-oxopentanoate also forms a crystal lattice that contains two molecules of dimerized methyl 2-fluoro-3-oxopentanoate.
