Methyl 4-methoxysalicylate is a fatty acid derivative that is structurally related to salicylic acid. It has been shown to have minimal inhibitory concentrations against Staphylococcus epidermidis, a bacterium that commonly colonizes the skin. Methyl 4-methoxy salicylate was also able to inhibit the growth of Salmonella typhimurium and Escherichia coli in vitro. It may act by inhibiting bacterial protein synthesis, although this is not yet confirmed. Methyl 4-methoxy salicylate also has antibacterial properties and has been shown to inhibit the growth of S. epidermidis, a bacterium that commonly colonizes the skin.
