The skeleton of this molecule is hydrophobic, which leads to membrane potential changes in mitochondria. The transients of this molecule are encapsulated by a membrane and it has shown to have an effect on mitochondrial membrane potential. Methyl 2-amino-4,5-dimethoxybenzoate also shows fluorescence lifetime effects and can be used as a probe for measuring mitochondrial membrane potential.
