2-Methylglutaronitrile is a catalyst that is used for the selective hydrogenation of aliphatic hydrocarbons to produce fatty acids. This compound has been shown to be an excellent extractant for selenium compounds and a good solid catalyst. It can also be used as an isomerizing or reaction intermediate. 2-Methylglutaronitrile has been found to have biochemical properties that allow it to transport organic molecules across membranes, making it useful in the treatment of diseases such as cystic fibrosis.
