It has been shown to selectively inhibit the activity of the enzyme carbonic anhydrase. This drug is also able to bind to metal ions with nitrogen atoms, such as copper and zinc, which may be useful for cancer treatments. 2-Methyl-1,10-phenanthroline has also been shown to have anti-tumor activity in prostate carcinoma cells when used as a ternary complex with hypophosphorous acid and anhydrase.
