Methyl trifluoromethanesulfonate inhibits HIV infection by binding to gp120 and preventing receptor binding. This reaction also leads to conformational changes in gp120 and causes gp41 to insert into the membrane, disrupting fusion of viral and cellular membranes and inhibiting viral replication.
