This organic solvent has been shown to be effective at high concentrations and low temperatures, which are key properties for this application. The spontaneous reactions of 4-(methylthio)butanol with sulfide may lead to the formation of unidentified products. 4-(Methylthio)butanol also has a strong effect on the volatility of sulfur-containing compounds, which can be exploited for headspace analysis and reaction monitoring.
