2-Methylhexanoic acid is a chemical compound with the formula CH(CH)COOH. This colorless liquid is an important industrial chemical that is used in the production of polyvinyl acetate, 2-methylhexanoic acid has been shown to be effective against influenza virus at concentrations of 1 mM and above. It also has an effect on the activity of adenosine receptors. The biological effects of 2-methylhexanoic acid are due to its ability to act as a cationic surfactant. This compound can disrupt cell membranes by binding to amines and fatty acids, which leads to a loss of membrane integrity and ultimately cell death.
