S-Methyl thioacetate is a trifluoroacetic acid derivative that inhibits the polymerase chain reaction in bacteria. It binds to the hydroxyl group of DNA and prevents nucleotide synthesis, leading to cell death. S-Methyl thioacetate has been shown to inhibit the growth of a number of infectious diseases, including tuberculosis and malaria. The mechanism of action is thought to be due to its ability to inhibit transfer reactions that are important for DNA replication and transcription. S-Methyl thioacetate can be used as an analytical tool for determining the presence of sulfur in organic compounds by using gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC-MS) with solid phase microextraction (SPME).
