3-Mercapto-2-butanone is an inhibitor that belongs to the class of model complexes. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of certain bacteria in model systems and has been used as a carbon source in these studies. 3-Mercapto-2-butanone inhibits matrix metalloproteinase activity on the surface of cells, which may be useful for therapeutic purposes. 3-Mercapto-2-butanone has also shown some success in preventing environmental pollution from butyric acid.
