It has been shown to be active against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria. 2-Mercaptopropionic acid has also been shown to bind to the basic protein in bacterial cells. This binding prevents DNA replication and transcription, inhibiting protein synthesis and cell division. 2-Mercaptopropionic acid is a covalent linker that binds strongly to copper ions in solution, which can cause toxicity in higher concentrations. The hydrophobic nature of 2-mercaptopropionic acid makes it difficult to extract from biological samples using solid phase microextraction (SPME) with a disulfide bond as the stationary phase, but this property also makes it an effective antimicrobial agent for use in wastewater treatment plants.
