4-Methylthiazole is a substrate molecule that can react with an oxidation catalyst to form a variety of products. The oxidation of 4-methylthiazole by benzimidazole compounds produces an antimicrobial agent, piperonyl butoxide. The reaction mechanism is thought to be due to the addition of the hydroxy group on the 4-methylthiazole ring to the benzimidazolium ion. This reaction also produces a dipole, which may facilitate transfer of electrons from the 4-methylthiazole to the benzimidazolium ion. The reaction product is then formed by removal of water from the intermediate.
