3-Methylbenzoic anhydride is a chemical compound that is used as an intermediate in the synthesis of many organic compounds. 3-Methylbenzoic anhydride has been shown to be a useful chromatographic or gas chromatographic analysis technique for the identification of substances such as cocaine and alcohols. A magnetic resonance spectroscopy (NMR) study has also shown that 3-methylbenzoic anhydride is a structural analogue of phenylacetic acid, which can be used in pharmacokinetic studies. It can also be used to cross-couple with aldehydes.
