Mercaptoacetic acid potassium can be used as a toxicity study for anti-fungal agents. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of yeast cells by binding to their cell wall. This chemical also binds with iron oxides and forms a skeleton that prevents the growth of bacteria. Mercaptoacetic acid potassium is soluble in water, but insoluble in organic solvents such as acetone or ether. The chemical can react with anhydrous hydrochloric acid to form mercaptoacetic acid hydrochloride, which is soluble in organic solvents.
