The compound also serves as a precursor in the synthesis of tiglic acid, which is a lysine precursor. 3-Methylthiopropionic acid has been found to be effective in slowing the growth of cancer cells. It has been shown to inhibit fatty acid synthesis, and may also inhibit methionine synthetase activity and cell proliferation.
