Methyl 4-methoxybenzoate has been used as an organic reagent, as well as a pharmaceutical intermediate and additive in food manufacturing. It also has biological properties such as being an anti-inflammatory agent and being able to inhibit the growth of infectious diseases like tuberculosis and malaria. Methyl 4-methoxybenzoate can be synthesized by reacting benzoic acid with methanol, phosphoric acid, or hydrochloric acid.
