It is a deaminated compound and the yield of this reaction depends on the acidity of the reactants. In acidic conditions, methyl 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoate yields more diazonium ions than in basic conditions. Methyl 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoate reacts with benzyl chloride to form an iminium ion, which then reacts with potassium carbonate to produce the desired benzimidazole derivative. This reaction has been rationalized by proposing a mechanism in which the carbonyl group of methyl 2-chloro-5-nitrobenzoate is first protonated to form an enolate ion and then reacts with an electrophilic nucleophile (e.g., benzyl chloride) to produce the desired product.
