2-Mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a broad-spectrum antimicrobial agent that has been shown to be active against Gram positive and Gram negative bacteria. This compound has been shown to have an adsorption mechanism involving the formation of complexes with chloride ions, which leads to protonation of the mercapto group. 2-Mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole is also active against fungi and protozoa. It has been shown to have binding interactions with hydroxy groups on proteins and other biomolecules. The compound can be used as a catalyst for organic reactions that require a hydrogen bond donor such as carbon disulphide or hydrogen chloride.
2-Mercapto-1,3,4-thiadiazole does not react with water at room temperature but will react when heated in the presence of hydrochloric acid. Thermodynamic data for this reaction are available from
