• Descripción: 4-Methylsulfonyl-2-nitrotoluene is a chlorinated chemical that is used in the production of dyes and other chemicals. In the presence of an electrolyte, it is electrochemically oxidized to 4-methylsulfinyl-2-nitrophenol (MSAN). The reaction time varies with the concentration of chloroacetic acid, chloride ion, and pH. It can be optimized by changing the concentrations of reactants or adding a metalloporphyrin catalyst. The product can be recycled through reaction with activated carbon or hydrogen peroxide, which converts it back to MSAN. 4-Methylsulfonyl-2-nitrotoluene has been shown to have an adverse effect on aquatic life and may pollute groundwater. This chemical also activates slowly when added to water, releasing chlorine gas and generating heat. Kinetic studies show that the rate of this reaction depends on pH and temperature.
