It can be used to make melatonin, which is a hormone that regulates sleep cycles and seasonal changes in animals. 3-Methyl-4-nitroanisole can also be used to prepare nitrophenol, which is a precursor in the production of nylon. The luminescent properties of 3-methyl-4-nitroanisole are useful for analytical techniques such as UV spectroscopy, which can detect concentrations of this chemical at less than 1 ppm.
