• Descripción: Methidathion is a carbamate insecticide that is used in wastewater treatment. It is a chemical pesticide that works by inhibiting the enzyme cholinesterase, which is needed for proper functioning of the nervous system. Methidathion has been shown to cause sublethal effects on weevils and other insects, including changes in physiological function, enzyme activities, and antioxidant vitamins. The mechanism of action of methidathion involves the reaction with an electron-rich site (nitrogen atom) on the enzyme molecule to form a covalent bond. This prevents the binding of acetylcholine molecules to the enzyme and leads to inhibition of acetylcholine synthesis. Methidathion also reacts with sodium citrate, forming sodium methidathionate, which inhibits plant metabolism. Acute toxicities have been observed when high doses are ingested or inhaled.
