The synthesis of 4-methoxyisoquinoline starts with the reaction between hydrochloric acid and imine, which yields an intermediate cyclic. This intermediate cyclic is then treated with trifluoroacetic acid in order to yield a mixture of carboxylic acids, including 4-methoxyisoquinoline.
