2-(Methylsulfonyl)-5-(trifluoromethyl)-1,3,4-thiadiazole is a sulfone with the chemical formula C6H5SO2F3. It is a white crystalline solid that has been shown to be an effective oxidizing agent. The reaction of 2-methylsulfonyl-5-(trifluoromethyl)thiadiazole with hydrogen peroxide in the presence of a catalytic amount of trifluoroacetic acid produces hydrogen peroxide and methylthio trifluoromethanesulfonate. This product can then be used as a reagent for the oxidation of alcohols to their corresponding carboxylic acids.
