Disulfide bonds are formed by the oxidation of sulfhydryl groups in proteins, which are reduced by glutathione reductase to produce sulfhydryl groups. 3-Methyl-5-isothiazolamine has been shown to react with molecular ions that are characteristic of isothiazoles and isothiazole derivatives, as well as aromatic compounds such as 4-hydroxybenzoic acid. This product also reacts with dehydrogenase enzymes, such as alcohol dehydrogenase, which produces oxidized products from carbohydrates and other organic molecules that contain hydroxyl groups.
