2-Methyl-1-(trimethylsilyloxy)-1-propene (2MTP) is a biodegradable, nonionic surfactant that can be used in wastewater treatment. It is also an effective anticancer agent with a dry weight of about 150 g/mol. 2MTP has shown to be cytotoxic to human serum and cell culture cells. In the presence of fatty acids, 2MTP induces cell death by apoptosis and necrosis. The mechanism of action is not yet known, but it may be due to its reaction with fatty acids in the cell membrane and inhibition of phospholipid synthesis.
