2-Methyl-L-phenylalanine (2MP) is a synthetic amino acid that is used as a protein building block in the synthesis of peptides, proteins, and other biomolecules. It can be used to synthesize analogs of naturally occurring amino acids for use in long-term treatment or to combat infectious diseases. 2MP has been shown to be an effective dose against viruses and bacteria. This molecule also binds metal ions and antimicrobial peptides, making it a potential candidate for the development of novel drugs. 2MP has been shown to inhibit the transcription-polymerase chain reaction and can be used as a chromatographic standard for metal ion concentration measurements.
