Methyl 2-Amino-5-bromonicotinate is an inhibitor of protein synthesis. It inhibits the formation of peptide bonds by blocking the attachment of amino acids to ribosomes, which may result in cell death. Methyl 2-Amino-5-bromonicotinate has been shown to inhibit endoplasmic reticulum ATPase activity and to affect the binding of ATP to subunits in vitro. The drug also inhibits brain acetylcholine esterase activity. Methyl 2-Amino-5-bromonicotinate has been used as a treatment for Alzheimer's disease, with some success in clinical trials. The drug has also been shown to be effective against other neurological diseases such as Parkinson's disease and multiple sclerosis.
