3-(4-Methylphenoxy)benzoic acid is a phenoxyacetic herbicide that inhibits the synthesis of enzymes involved in fatty acid and lipid biosynthesis. It has been shown to translocate from the leaves to the phloem, where it accumulates. 3-(4-Methylphenoxy)benzoic acid has been shown to inhibit lipophilic and lipophilic enzyme activities in plant tissues exudates, resulting in a reduction in the translocation of organic substances such as benzoic acid. This compound is synthesized using a novel process that involves ionisation of benzoic acid with an electrophilic reagent followed by nucleophilic substitution with 4-methylphenol.
