It is also used to produce insecticides, herbicides, and fungicides. 8-Methoxyisoquinoline has been shown to be effective against infectious diseases such as malaria and leishmaniasis. This compound can be found in natural products such as protoberberine alkaloids and has been shown to inhibit acetylcholinesterase (AChE) activity. It has also been shown to inhibit the growth of bacteria that are resistant to erythromycin, tetracycline, chloramphenicol, and penicillin.
