4-Methylanisole is a natural compound that is found in anise, star anise, and fennel. It has been shown to inhibit the reaction of p-hydroxybenzoic acid with trifluoroacetic acid in a nonpolar solvent. 4-Methylanisole can be synthesized by reacting diphenyl ether with piperonyl butoxide in methanol as solvent. This synthesis may also require the presence of surface methodology, such as ultrasonic waves. The toxicity of 4-methylanisole has been studied extensively and found to be low for human health.
