Methyl (S)-2-isocyanato-3-phenylpropionate is an organic compound with the chemical formula CH3NCOCH2COOC6H5. This colorless liquid is a building block in organic synthesis. It can be used as an esterification agent to form methyl esters from carboxylic acid or amines, or as an elimination agent to form amides from carboxylic acids. Methyl (S)-2-isocyanato-3-phenylpropionate has been shown to be a useful reagent for the synthesis of L-phenylalanine ethyl ester, which is a monobasic amino acid ester.
