(S)-(-)-2-Methyl-1-butanol is a synthetic organic acid that has been shown to be effective in the treatment of bacterial infections. This compound has a terminal alkene and an acetyl group on the butanol moiety. It has been used to inhibit the growth of bacteria such as Staphylococcus aureus, Enterococcus faecalis, and Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The compound is also effective against yeast cells, including phenotypically similar strains such as Saccharomyces cerevisiae and Candida albicans. The compound is active against Gram-positive bacteria because it inhibits cell wall synthesis which prevents peptidoglycan crosslinking. (S)-(-)-2-Methyl-1-butanol inhibits bacterial growth by binding to DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV enzymes, which maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA.
