Methyldiphenylphosphine is a white solid that is used in the preparation of diagnostic agents. It reacts with hydrochloric acid to form methyldiphenylphosphoryl chloride, which is used in the synthesis of hexamethylenetetramine and other compounds. In addition, methyldiphenylphosphine reacts with various metal ions to form complexes. Methyldiphenylphosphine has also been shown to inhibit heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. The mechanism of this inhibition is unclear but may be due to an interaction with cytosolic calcium or hydrogenated methyldiphenylphosphine's ability to form a complex with heparin. Methyldiphenylphosphine can be synthesized by reacting phenylmagnesium bromide and phosphorus pentachloride in the presence of hydrochloric acid.
