It reacts with hydrochloric acid to form methyldiphenylphosphoryl chloride, which is used in the synthesis of hexamethylenetetramine and other compounds. In addition, methyldiphenylphosphine reacts with various metal ions to form complexes. Methyldiphenylphosphine has also been shown to inhibit heparin-induced thrombocytopenia. The mechanism of this inhibition is unclear but may be due to an interaction with cytosolic calcium or hydrogenated methyldiphenylphosphine's ability to form a complex with heparin.
