The synthesis of this compound can be achieved through catalytic reduction of the nitro group with hydrogen in the presence of a nickel catalyst. This method has been shown to produce high yields. 2-Methyl-3-nitrophenylacetic acid is mildly toxic to humans and animals. It is a dopaminergic agent that has been used as a precursor for the production of ropinirole hydrochloride, which is used in the treatment of Parkinson's disease.
