Descripción:3-Methoxy-5-nitrobenzoic acid is an organic compound that has mesomorphic and switchable properties. It is a chalcone derivative, with homologues such as 3-hydroxybenzoic acid. It is synthesized from the reaction of nitrous acid and 3-methoxybenzoic acid. The synthesis of this compound can be achieved by two different routes: peroxide oxidation or fluorine substitution. Both routes produce the same product, but offer different advantages. The first route involves the addition of hydrogen peroxide to 3-methoxybenzoic acid, which produces a mixture of products containing 3-methoxy-5-nitrobenzoic acid. This route is advantageous in that it can be conducted at room temperature with high yields, but the disadvantage is that this method produces a mixture of products which may contain undesired byproducts.
