Trans-4-Methoxy-beta-nitrostyrene is a chiral, catalytic compound that was synthesized from 4-methoxybenzaldehyde and nitrous acid. It has been shown to inhibit the growth of rat thoracic 5-hydroxytryptamine (5-HT)1A receptor neurons and prevent the activation of these receptors by serotonin in rats. Trans-4-Methoxy-beta-nitrostyrene may have therapeutic potential as an antidepressant or antiemetic drug. The mechanism of action is not fully understood, but it is thought that trans-4-Methoxy-beta-nitrostyrene binds to the active site on the 5HT1A receptor and blocks serotonin binding. Trans-4 Methoxy beta nitrostyrene has also been shown to inhibit folic acid synthesis in cancer cells, which may be due to its ability to inhibit methionine synthase through amines.
