It has been shown to inhibit the replication of dsDNA, ssDNA, and RNA viruses. 4-Methyl-3-nitrobenzaldehyde binds to nucleic acids by forming hydrogen bonds with the carboxylic acid group on the molecule and the acceptor, which are usually hydroxyl groups or amino groups. 4-Methyl-3-nitrobenzaldehyde can be used for the synthesis of viologens, which are molecules that can be used as electron acceptors in organic reactions.
