Methyl 4-fluorobenzoylacetate is used as a synthetic intermediate in the synthesis of coumarin derivatives and phenylcoumarins. This molecule may also have anti-inflammatory properties, which are due to its ability to inhibit cyclooxygenase enzymes. Methyl 4-fluorobenzoylacetate is also an antibacterial agent and has been shown to be a potent inhibitor of bacterial DNA gyrase and topoisomerase IV, which maintain the integrity of bacterial DNA.
