This molecule is also hydroxylated by the enzyme hippuric acid, which binds to it, preventing its excretion in urine. The compound 4-methylmercapto benzoic acid is not present in plants, but it can be synthesized from glucosinolates. 4-Methylmercapto benzoic acid is transported across membranes by passive diffusion and has been shown to have an excretion rate of 0.7% per hour.
