4-Methyl-2-(2-pyridinyl)-1,3-thiazole-5-carboxylic acid is a coordination complex that contains two divalent metal ions. The coordination geometry is octahedral and the compound crystallizes in three different polymorphs: α, β, and γ. It has a layered structure with alternating layers of the carboxylate ligands and the metal ions. 4MTT forms supramolecular complexes with other compounds possessing electron donor groups such as thiols or amines. This property makes it suitable for use in catalytic asymmetric syntheses. The coordination of 4MTT to divalent metal ions gives it a high affinity for DNA gyrase, an enzyme that maintains the integrity of bacterial DNA.
