Myrislignan is a natural compound that belongs to the group of epidermal growth factor (EGF) and has been shown to have potent cytotoxicity in many types of cancer cells. Myrislignan also induces pro-apoptotic protein expression and mitochondrial membrane potential reduction, which leads to cell death. Myrislignan is synthesized from a fatty acid by an asymmetric synthesis, which can be achieved through an intramolecular hydrogen transfer. This process creates two molecules of myrislignan, one with a hydroxyl group on carbon 2 and the other with a hydroxyl group on carbon 3. The pharmacokinetic properties of myrislignan are not well understood but it has been shown to bind to rat liver microsomes.
