Methylophiopogonanone B is a protocatechuic acid that belongs to the family of ophiopogonoids. It is found in the root extract of Ophiopogon japonicus and has been shown to have an inhibitory effect on several biological processes. Methylophiopogonanone B inhibits the production of acetate from glucose in vitro, which may be due to its ability to inhibit enzymes such as ATP-citrate lyase and acetyl-CoA carboxylase. This compound also has an anti-inflammatory effect and can protect brain cells from oxidative damage by inhibiting reactive oxygen species (ROS) production in vitro. Inhibition of ROS production is beneficial for cancer resistance as well. The chemical structure of methylophiopogonanone B has been determined using liquid chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry (LC-MS/MS).
