Melanin concentrating hormone (MCH) is a peptide that belongs to the family of neuropeptides. It has been shown to be involved in the regulation of food intake and energy metabolism. MCH stimulates the release of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) from neurons, which may account for its inhibitory effects on locomotor activity, neuronal function, and brain functions. MCH is also a potent stimulator of cyclic adenosine monophosphate (cAMP) production in hepatocytes, leading to hepatic steatosis. MCH binds with high affinity to its receptor in the hypothalamus and pituitary gland.
