This compound is used in combination with other antiviral agents for the treatment of HIV-1 infection and for prophylaxis against HIV-1 infection. Tenofovir has been shown to be effective against infections caused by strains of HIV-1, such as the drug resistant virus. Tenofovir is absorbed rapidly after oral administration, with a bioavailability of over 80%.
