Methyl 3-(trimethylsilyloxy)crotonate is a colourless liquid with a sweet smell that is used in the synthesis of polymers. It can be obtained by reacting naphthol and benzyl chloride with 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate. The molecule has been characterized using x-ray crystallography, which revealed that it has an asymmetric carbon atom. Methyl 3-(trimethylsilyloxy)crotonate has reactive properties that allow it to undergo various reactions including aromatization, allylation, and transfer reactions. This compound is also known for its high molecular weight.
